The best way for the body to benefit from the therapeutic components of essential oils is a combination of inhalation through the olfactory system of the nose and absorption through the surface of the skin.Essential oils are extremely concentrated liquids naturally extracted from plant parts. Even though they are “pure”, they have active chemical components that can be damaging to the internal lining of the mouth, esophagus and stomach, especially after continued use. Adding them to water will not dilute them, as they are oils and do not mix in water without a solvent. In addition, when ingesting essential oils, the natural enzymes in our mouth and digestive track begin breaking down the aromatic molecules, therefore, you are not necessarily getting the direct benefits of their naturally-occurring active components. Also, the antimicrobial nature of essential oils can greatly disrupt the natural flora of the stomach, thus, disturbing the digestion and assimilation of one’s food.
